Director of Human Resources – Johnson County KS

Johnson County, Kansas is seeking a new Director of Human Resources.

The Director of Human Resources will lead a team of 26 highly-skilled staff and oversee all human resources services in a high performing organization characterized by excellence in service delivery, collaboration across departments, and empowering leadership and continuous improvement at all levels of the organization. Oversees three direct reports: the Deputy Director of Human Resources and two Human Resources Managers. Reports to the County Manager and serves as an internal consultant to County Management and the Executive Leadership Team. The Director and/or other key HR staff members participate in cross-departmental teams that have organization-wide impact. Responsible for the daily operations of the Department of Human Resources (HRD), which includes recruitment, onboarding, and retention of a diverse workforce; compensation and classification; employee relations; learning and development; recognition; and employee records and data. Payroll and benefits are overseen by the Treasury & Financial Management Department, and HRD staff work closely with this department on key workforce strategies and initiatives.

Qualifications: Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Industrial or Organizational Psychology, Business or Public Administration, Sociology, or a closely related field, 10 years of progressively responsible HR experience as a generalist (which may include some or all of employment/AA/ EEO, classification and compensation, employee benefits, risk management, employee/labor relations, organizational development/training and development, employee assessment, and HRIS/records management/ employee records). Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification by the Human Resources Certificate Institute (HRCI) and five years of administrative and supervisory experience in a complex environment are also required. Years of experience may be substituted for higher education. 

Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree, 15 years of HR experience, and two years of experience in the administration of comprehensive HR services and programs. Knowledge of high performing organization (HPO) principles and SHRM-SCP and IPMA-SCP certification are also highly preferred.  A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel outside of Johnson County and the Greater Kansas City region are required.

Compensation and Benefits: The salary range is $114,794 – $172,191, depending on qualifications, with an excellent benefits package. Residency is not required
